Message from the Board President
On behalf of the Durham Unified School District Board of Trustees, I welcome all of you-both new and returning students, parents and staff. The beginning of the 2019-2020 school year brings with it a great deal of excitement, enthusiasm and we are confident that our students will establish and achieve new goals along their academic path which will serve to prepare them for their bright and successful future. As a district, we are proud of the working relationship between our caring and dedicated staff and the parents and community volunteers that enable us to look forward with anticipation to the many goals that lie before us. This relationship has served us and our mission very well in the past and we look forward to continuing that experience for all involved.
We realize that many challenges to education exist throughout our state and we, here in Durham, are subject to the many and varied mandates and funding guidelines that come from our state capital. As we all continue to seek a stabilized funding plan for the district, we acknowledge that we must continue to work as a team with parents, staff and all local area residents to insure that the education we provide our students is the best that we can provide.
The Board of Trustees is most appreciative of the overwhelming community support that made our most recent bond issue a reality. Plans are ongoing to make sure that those funds, as issued and received, will be applied in ways that will serve our district needs most effectively. A citizens committee will be working to help make sure that we get the most for our funding from the bonds. The next several years will be an exciting time for us all as we make some long needed changes to some facilities and use the funds where most needed.
Rest assured that the entire board takes our responsibility as Trustees most seriously and we are dedicated to continue our pursuit of maintaining and enhancing our students’ potential to be knowledgeable, productive and responsible citizens. We encourage you to be actively engaged in your child’s education. Visit classrooms, volunteer when possible, and meet with Teachers, Principals and the Superintendent with any concerns you may have. The Trustees hold regularly scheduled monthly meetings and the agendas are posted prior to these meetings-currently set for 7:00 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month August thru June.
We are your neighbors and we welcome your contact with us on any and all questions, concerns or comments you believe will assist us in our service to the district and the pursuit of our district goals. We thank you for your confidence in Durham Unified School District. Your trust and support enables and encourages us in our pursuit of the best education we can provide our students. We look forward to working with you to help our students and staff complete another productive, safe and rewarding year.
Your Board of Trustees: Alex DuBose, Kathy Horn, Ed McLaughlin and Matthew Thorpe
